Tulip Waistcoat

These delightful waistcoats are fitted through the chest and waist, and flare out into a peplum over the side and rear hip to create the illusion of a nipped-in waist.

You can really wear them with everything — try dress shirts, T-shirts, sweaters, and plain dresses to add a little panache.  Or pair them with a peasant top, Baroness top, or even a Victorian chemise for a history-inspired look. Or go in a whole other direction with a tuxedo shirt and trousers!

Tulip waistcoats go beautifully with Steampunk ensembles; you can use one to pull together an outfit when you don’t feel like wearing a corset, since this waistcoat does a pretty good job of creating the wasp-waisted look without actually restricting you.

The peplum’s flare is kind to both wide hips and the lack of hips.  The back has a ribbon tie so you can adjust waist size when you wear different thicknesses of layers, or if you want to wear a corset underneath.

NOTE: Buttons and minor details may vary slightly from item to item.

NOTE: Some seams, darts, back yokes, or other fitting-related details which are shown in the photos will change between sizes or body shapes, and may look different or be completely absent in your version (depending on your particular size or shape).  Design details that don’t affect fit, such as collars or pockets, will stay the same between sizes.

WARNING: Your monitor may not show colours or textures accurately!  If the exact shade is important to you, you can order a fabric swatch for $5, which will be deducted from your order.

For Tulip waistcoats, you can choose from the following galleries:

  • Suitings (any)
  • Faux Suedes
  • Jacquards
  • Brocades
  • Silk Brocades
  • Corduroys
  • Lace Overlays.

Some materials may benefit from being made with coordinating side panels in a suiting with some give, both for comfort and appearance, depending on your preference (you can see what this looks like in the black and gold brocade waistcoat in the product photos).  If you choose one of these, we’ll mention it when you email us.

The tulip waistcoat has side panels with built-in stretch, so the fit is somewhat forgiving.  Remember that the waist can be made smaller by pulling in the back ties.  We make these with a wearing ease of 2-3 inches above body measurement at chest level to accommodate layering except in materials with stretch (in which case, we go for 1-2 inches of ease).  If you’d like your waistcoat to be made to fit looser or tighter than this, please make a note of it during your order.
