Tulip Waistcoat

These little vests are fitted through the bust and waist, and flare out into a peplum shape over the side and rear hip to create the illusion of a tiny waist.  You can wear them over everything from dress shirts and T-shirts to plain dresses or Victorian chemises to add a little panache.

They go beautifully with Steampunk ensembles; you can use one to pull together an outfit when you don’t feel like wearing a corset, since this waistcoat does a pretty good job of creating the wasp-waisted look without actually restricting anything.  The peplum flare disguises both too-wide hips and lack of hips.  The back has a ribbon tie so you can adjust waist size for layering, or if you want to wear a corset underneath.

Buttons and minor details may vary slightly from item to item.

For Tulip waistcoats, you can choose from the following galleries:

  • Suitings (any)
  • Faux Suedes
  • Jacquards
  • Brocades
  • Silk Brocades
  • Corduroys
  • Lace Overlays.

Some materials may benefit from being made with coordinating side panels in a suiting with some give, both for comfort and appearance, depending on your preference (you can see what this looks like in the black and gold brocade waistcoat in the product photos).  If you choose one of these, we’ll mention it when you email us.

The waistcoat has side panels with built-in stretch, so the fit is quite forgiving.  If you fall between sizes, you should probably go with the smaller size.  Remember, the waist can be made smaller by pulling in the back ties.  Our sizing is NOT like ready-to-wear, so don’t assume you know what size you are!

The measurements given are actual garment measurements, not your body measurements.  No hip measurement is given, because the peplum means the hip area is totally unfitted.  You’ll need anywhere between 1 and 4 inches of wearing ease (extra space above your actual body measurements) depending on how snug a fit you like in your clothes and what you’ll be wearing underneath.
